House on a Hill-Halbarawa

Sri Lanka Horagala west, Sri Lanka

from €1,100 per week

The property is named "House on a hill- Halbarawa", Halbarawa being the tiny rustic village where the property is located. The village is mainly Rubber and Paddy lands. Access to the property is along A4, a main highway from Colombo to Badulla; 25 km from Colombo, just one hour drive. It's only a few km to the Intersection of the New express way from Colombo to Galle,- the most popular tourist area in the country, making it only about one and a half hours drive to Galle. Once the highway linking the Galle expressway to Katunayake (where the international airport is situated) is completed the end of the year, accessibility to and from the airport would become that much easier and faster.

As the name implies the house is built on a Tea covered hill in a 45 acre working plantation of Tea, Rubber, Coconut, Pepper and Cinnamon. The house was intended as the Estate Bungalow. But the site with it's unique 360 degree view of the beautiful natural landscape gave the Renowned Architect Mr. Ashley de Vos the inspiration to design an architectural masterpiece which won him the South Asia Architect of the year award in the year 2008. It's the only building from Sri Lanka listed in the World Building Directory. ( http://www.worldbuildingsdirectory.com/project.cfm?id=1070 ) Please go through the link to get the architectural details about the building.

The house is a simple square structure with 3 large bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a large hall, pantry area and a study cum TV room all opening in to the simple veranda which runs around the whole upper area. The lobby, kitchen, storage room and staff quarters on the lower level. The beautiful infinity swimming pool borders the forest of endemic trees, which was planted to form a buffer between the house and the plantations.
Hot and cold water is available and a Generator is installed to be used during any power failures; that might arise due to bad weather conditions.

The uniqueness of the House on a Hill is it's magnificent 360 degree view. As you enter the building by borrowing in to the hill and climb up to the upper level the view bursts upon you with such excitement and exuberance you are momentarily stunned, awestruck and humbled the sheer beauty of the surroundings. The huge expanse of space without any obstructions and the silence, makes you so relaxed and at peace with yourself and involuntarily you become one with the surroundings.

The view never is the same, it's changing perpetually every minute, every hour, every day. Watching the rain clouds gather amid the thunder and the streaks of lightening creating momentary connections with the earth; followed by two or more complete rainbows just after the rain's stopped, are experiences that are never to be had anywhere else, nor is the experience of seeing the sun setting on one side while the moon has already made it's entrance on the other; the large expanse of sky on a clear night with millions and millions of stars, each constellation so sharply defined just as the drawings in a book, the huge moon on a full moon day bathing the place in ethereal beauty, and the complete silence at night except for sounds of crickets, croaks of frogs and sometimes the howl of a lone fox in the distance.

The weather is always cool with an eternal breeze and the mornings covered in mist most of the time. The orchard of fruit trees attract a wide variety of colorful birds and a host of exotic butterflies. It's home to a huge variety of insects as well.

Relax, Rest and Rejuvenate, is what we promise and offer.
